Q: What’s the difference between analytical and precision balances?
A: While precision balances are more accurate and precise than most scales, they feature a lower readability than analytical balances. They often feature a higher capacity and are less sensitive to changes. That means they can be used outside of labs for applications that require a high level of precision but also measure bigger samples in more variable conditions.
Q: What weight sizes would I need to calibrate a precision balance?
A: That depends on your model. For basic compact models, you can go as high as 1 or 2 grams, and as low as 0.01 g. For higher end models designed for lab usage, you should get increments between 0.01 and 0.001g. Always check your readability before choosing a calibration weight.
Q: What’s the difference between precision and accuracy?
A: Precision is how close multiple measurements are to each other. If you measure the same sample 5 times, you should get the same result each time. If the measurements are different each time, and they’re not close, you balance is not precise. Accuracy is how close a measurement is when compared to a known value.
