Q: What Is an Analytical Balance?

A: An analytical balance, often referred to as a lab balance are designed for measuring mass with a high degree of accuracy with readabilities ranging from 0.01mg (semi-micro) to 0.0001g. Designed for precise weighing of small samples, analytical balances are used in a range of industries such as science laboratories, pharmaceuticals research and development and higher education institutions.

Q: What Precautions Should I Take When Using an Analytical Balance?

A: Whilst your analytical balance will have been calibrated initially by the manufacturer, before you start to use your analytical balance it is extremely important to calibrate it due to its high levels of sensitivity. If your analytical balance is moved, then it should always be recalibrated to ensure results are always of the highest of accuracy. Wearing gloves is also highly recommended when using an analytical balance as oil and dirt that may be found on your hands could potentially compromise a sample or the accuracy of tests weights used to manually calibrate a balance which could lead to incorrect and inaccurate readings.

A: Due to analytical balances being extremely sensitive, the external environment can majorly affect the results and the validity of data that is gathered, such a breeze from an open window or draft. Therefore, analytical balances should always be used in a dedicated room with as few disturbances as possible.
