Oil is an essential part of any engine, making everything work smoothly. But as the engine runs, oil tends to break down and dissipate. If oil consumption is not precisely measured and tracked, an automotive engine can seize up or perform below standards. One way to measure engine performance is by using an oil consumption test. This test removes all the oil from the engine and its system, then weighs out an initial quantity of oil. That oil is added to the engine and the engine is run for a period of time. After the test, the remaining oil is drained and weighed again to measure consumption. The results show mechanics and engineers the efficiency of the system.
