FOURTH FREE SCIENCE RESOURCE
Lab Activities Help Teach Key Science Concepts With Adam School Balances
Adam Equipment, a world-class manufacturer of mass measurement equipment, has released The Burning Question: A Conservation of Matter Experiment. This ready-to-use classroom activity is available at the company’s education website for downloading and it may be copied and distributed for educational purposes without charge. Penney Sconzo, a veteran chemistry teacher from Atlanta, developed and student-tested the experiment for Adam.

"Our goal with each Adam Experiment is for the activity to be stimulating, relevant, complete, and easy for teachers to incorporate into their existing curriculum," said Jeremy Storey, Director of US Operations for Adam Equipment. "The educator-authors who develop the experiments for us focus on providing all the information teachers will need before, during, and after they do the experiment with their students. We hope that these classroom resources, together with our durable and reliable school balances, will make the demanding jobs of science teachers a little easier."

Adam’s no cost Burning Question Experiment introduces a safer, yet more effective, method for demonstrating the Law of Conservation of Matter. Unlike previous student experiments on this key science concept, this new Adam Experiment involves burning steel wool in both an open and closed environment so that students can better understand what happens to matter during a chemical reaction. The second part, in a closed environment, especially helps to dispel common student misconceptions about combustion reactions. Also, by weaving the history of Antoine Lavoisier (the Father of Modern Chemistry) into the activity, science’s human link is connected for students.

Like all Adam classroom resources, The Burning Question was developed and student-tested by teachers in the field. The free experiment is ready-to-use with three reproducible student sheets: a prep sheet, a procedures sheet, and a work sheet. The teacher support guide features an overview of the activity, helpful advice to maximize safety and student success, science and math education standards, a corresponding vocabulary / definition list, sample data, an answer key, plus an extension activity.

The Burning Question is the latest addition to Adam’s growing library of free science classroom resources. Other Adam activities available for teachers to use in their classes without cost are:Thatsa Pasta! - A Delicious Density Experiment, Egg Observations - An Osmosis Experiment, and Density Determination TOPICtutor - Archimides Ah-Ha Moment. All Adam classroom resources can be found in the Education Extras area at www.adamequipment.com/education.
